Fairy Meadow Hike

20-Jun-2023

Being a mountaineer, I have long heard stories of Nanga Parbat. Working on a nearby hydroelectric project finally gave me the opportunity to visit Fairy Meadows and the Nanga Parbat base camp. Fairy Meadows is a delightful place, marred only by the relentless competition between the hotels to build higher and bigger, falling trees to provide the lumber while severely scarring the precious forest. The walk to Beyal Camp and the Nanga Parbat viewpoint is fabulous and it was great to see so many Pakistanis underway, exploring their country. The hike onwards to the base camp is a bit challenging, but worth the while for experienced hikers. Getting so close to an 8000 m peak is incredible. Some preparation is required to visit the area and police checks have to be dealt with. My thanks go to Black Glacier Tours for excellently organizing my tour and for making this trip so unforgettable.

Hike to Patundas

20-Jun-2023

"A long time ago, shortly after the Karakoram Highway was built, I travelled through the Hunza Valley. I always hoped to come back some day and explore this area more. Fortunately, work took me recently to northern Pakistan and I was able to visit the upper Hunza valley. I trekked to the Passu glacier, Patundas Meadow and the Passu Peak base camp. This was a wonderful trek. The terrain that we crossed was varied, mostly in the arid zone, but sometimes also in the cedars, then finally in the alpine zone. We hiked along glacier moraines, crossed the Passu glacier and hiked the ridge above Patundas Meadows. Everywhere the views were breathtaking. The locals call it Patundas table, because the meadow is flat and provides a true 360 degree panorama. Some preparation is required to visit the area, organising the portars and food. My thanks go to Black Glacier Tours for excellently preparing and carrying out my tour and for making this trip so unforgettable."

Trip to Hunza

28-Jun-2023

A little review of our Trip to Hunza with Black Glacier Tours (28 jun - 04 Jul 2023) The hiking itinerary was very good with a variety of landscapes and levels with unexpected cultural stops. This was very refreshing and enjoyable, putting a smile on our faces. We have had the opportunity to participate with a part of local culture, manners and etiquette. Talking and listening as well as meeting people along the routes were a soutce of learning and enjoyment. We felt honoured to have been so welcomed! Not for us, as our itinerary was perfectly catered, but for future clients it may be worth adding a difficulty level for each of the walks (eg easy/moderate/hard). Also worth adding more advice on what kind of kit is needed, eg boots, waterproofs etc... We enjoyed all the walks! The hotel Kungra was a little gem. The host family is beyond welcoming and took us in as part of the family rather than just guests at the hotel. The rooms are really good with fantastic views and the traditional home cooking was excellent. We sat chatting with them for a few hours learning about each other. They were interested in our lives as we were in theirs. Borith lake : Another good choice for hotel - Good choice of walks and location for us to relax around the lake with swimming and boating. We appreciated very much for adding a walk (Avgarch valley) that we ourselves specifically requested that was not part of the original itinerary and for facilitating a local guide (Hassan). It is a brilliant walk to add to your itinerary. If you do so, we would recommend an early start to avoid the intense midday heat - we would say start at 6-7am... As we could not complete the full itinerary as planned, we very much appreciate you taking us around to add a few more pictures to our experience and album. Abida is a good addition to your local excursions to points of interest. She knows many people. It was very nice to have her with us. All in all, it was a trip of a lifetime meeting all and beyond our expectations. We definitely will use Black Glacier Tours again as well as promoting your agency. As you expand your series will be also good to campaign more for the environment and its damage and impact by educating local people on the dramatic effect the current behaviour and awareness is having. Some points for future clients : Fly to skardu then drive to hunza as flying to and from gilgit seems like a fiasco from what we've experienced and heard. Small first aid kit for emergencies (slates can cut, antiseptic and bandages... for heat exhaustion, some electrolyte and paracetamol... very simple) As an option at clients own cost, maybe provide a phone sim that works in hunza (for us it was very nice to disconnect but maybe not for everyone) . We had an amazing time. Thank you. Sylvine and Anser.
